How long have you been at Freie Universität?

I have been at Freie Universität since July 2009. First I attended the FUBiS summer term. After that I decided to continue at Freie Universität for my master´s.

Did you come through direct exchange or another program?

I have spent two years at Freie Universität through the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

What are you studying, and which semester are you in?

I am in the English Studies: Literature, Language, Culture master’s program. I am now in my last semester and am just writing my final thesis.

Where are you from, and where did you study at home?

I am from New Delhi in India. I completed my bachelor’s degree at the University of Delhi.

Why did you choose Freie Universität?

Freie Universität is one of the few universities offering this particular degree program. It was important to me to gain another perspective, a European one, in my field of English studies. Besides that, I wanted to improve my German.

What do you especially like about Freie Universität?

What I especially like is the internationality of the university. On campus you can see people from all over the world, and my instructors come from all over.

Also, in many respects the university is a “free university” in the most literal sense of the word. For example, my instructors have a great deal of freedom in selecting which topics they wish to handle. And I also have a lot of freedom in determining the structure of my studies.

What do you like less?

Too much freedom can sometimes lead to chaos …

Do you have any suggestions for someone new at Freie Universität?

Before coming here, I watched the video on the university’s home page and also many YouTube videos about Berlin. That gave me a good impression of the city and the university.

Any suggestions for living in Berlin?

Living in a foreign culture without language skills, at first I felt like a child in a world of adults. But you will get used to being here, and I am sure you will soon love Berlin as much as I do.
