Doctorate at Freie Universität
According to statistics from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from 2011, Freie Universität Berlin is the preferred address in Germany for doctoral candidates from abroad. The individual doctorate – independent research under supervision of a professor – is still the most common way to pursue a doctorate in Germany.
Increasingly, however, there are more opportunities for structured doctoral education at German universities. At Freie Universität Berlin many innovative and structured doctoral programs are comprised under the umbrella of Dahlem Research School (DRS). When earning a doctoral degree in one of the DRS-member programs, research is accompanied by a qualification program ensuring that young researchers not only acquire the relevant skills for a future career in academia or beyond, but also receive support in developing a strategic career plan.
