Supporting junior researchers is a priority at Freie Universität Berlin. This extends from providing outstanding conditions and research facilities to a research support service and assistance with more practical matters.
By establishing junior research groups, the university offers outstanding young scholars the opportunity to conduct independent research and build up their own working groups. In recent years, a number of funding institutions have established programs of this kind that include participation from researchers at Freie Universität Berlin.
Junior professorships were introduced in Germany in 2002 to encourage promising young researchers to pursue an academic career in Germany. The appointments are for a maximum of six years.
Freie Universität Berlin is closely involved in the Berlin Dual Career Network. Its purpose is to find effective ways to assist the spouses and partners of faculty and staff to secure area employment.
